Vyvanse Vs. Strattera for Adults

Vyvanse and Strattera are medications used in the treatment of adult ADHD. Strattera is the first non-stimulant drug approved for use with ADHD, and it has a very different side effect profile than stimulants such as Vyvanse.

  1. Chemical Difference

    • Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) is a stimulant pro-drug and is converted to dextroamphetamine by enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract. It acts primarily on the neurotransmitter dopamine. Strattera is a non-stimulant, acting primarily on the neurotransmitter norepinephrine.

    Efficacy

    • Both drugs have been generally clinically proven to relieve ADHD symptoms, but some individuals respond differently to each.

    Side Effects

    • Vyvanse, being a stimulant, can cause acute tachycardia, elevated blood-pressure and in some cases euphoria. The side effects of Strattera are more subtle and generalized, including insomnia, sexual dysfunction and "cotton mouth."

    Onset

    • Like all amphetamines, Vyvanse has an immediate therapeutic onset, usually within an hour of taking the first dose. Strattera might take several weeks before its therapeutic benefits are noticed.

    Abuse Potential

    • Vyvanse is not as habit-forming as older forms of amphetamines such as Adderall, but abuse is still a risk; it is a Schedule II drug for this reason. Strattera produces no "liking" effect, and is not considered a drug that can be abused.
