Cold Vs. Hot Humidifiers

Humidifiers can treat an array of symptoms and illnesses. Many children have had a humidifier to help with sinuses, cold, flu or a combination of all three. What some people don't know is that they can choose either a cold or hot humidifier.

  1. Hot Humidifier

    • A hot humidifier is probably the most common kind, one that puts moisture in the air by heating the water into steam and releasing warm steam into the air. These are also sometimes referred to as steam vaporizers.

    Cold Humidifier

    • A cold humidifier is designed to release moisture in the air through a rapidly moving disc, meaning there is no heat in the steam, so there is no danger of burns if the child gets too close. These are sometimes referred to as a cold mist humidifier.

    Hot Humidifier Pluses

    • These are great for treating colds and flu, the warm mist is more comforting in cold weather or climates and these are often quieter than cold humidifiers.

    Hot Humidifier Minuses

    • These cover a smaller area of the room than cold water humidifiers, can leave a small room feeling muggy or humid and there's the obvious problem of heat. A small child who gets too close and touches the humidifier can get burned from the heat.

    Cold Humidifier Pluses

    • Cold humidifiers are more comfortable in warm climates, they're easier to clean and there are models that can actually reduce the amount of dust in the air.

    Cold Humidifier Minuses

    • In some environments, a cold humidifier can make a room seem clammy and too cool. Most cold humidifiers are also noisier than warm models, making it harder for some sensitive children to sleep and rest.
