An Operational Definition of Autism

According to the Autism Society, autism results from a neurological disorder that affects an individual's ability to understand verbal and non-verbal communication. Autism usually appears in the first two years of a person's life.

    • According to Autism Speaks, the exact causes of autism are mostly unknown. However, individuals may inherit autism genetically through disorders such as Fragile X Syndrome.

    Prevalence

    • Approximately 1.5 million Americans suffer from some type of autism, with boys three to four times more likely to receive a diagnosis.

    Diagnosis

    • Behavioral observation and educational and psychological testing forms the basis for diagnosing autism. Criteria for an autism diagnosis include an inability to sustain a conversation, engaging in intense and restricted interests and delays in speech.

    Misconceptions

    • According to www.ourspecialkids.org, autism is not a mental illness. Autism also does not arise from poor parenting.

    Coping

    • Families should seek treatment for their autistic child and ask for help when necessary. According to Autism Speaks, families should also educate themselves about autism and discuss whatever feelings may develop from an autism diagnosis.
