Magnolia Tree Maintenance Requirements

The magnolia is a flowering tree that thrives in temperate climates. Its fragrant blossoms and shiny foliage make it a popular garden choice.

Geography

The magnolia tree prefers warm climates and fares best in United States Department of Agriculture Hardiness Zones 7 through 9. Magnolias planted in northern climates bloom less than their southern counterparts.

Soil Requirements

Magnolia trees prefer an acidic soil, so test yours using a soil pH kit and adjust it to 7 or lower if necessary. Magnolia trees should be fertilized yearly for optimum health.

Pruning

Since magnolia trees are delicate and slow-growing, only prune them annually to remove dead or damaged limbs. You may wish to trim back growth through more extensive pruning every few years.

Yard Maintenance

While magnolia trees are a gorgeous sight when in bloom, they shed all their flowers in the late spring, covering the ground in petals. You should rake the flowers so they don't rot into the ground.

Water Maintenance

Water magnolias regularly. The tree prefers a well-draining moist soil, so ensure your magnolia receives plenty of water in summer months.
