Shoulder bone fractures are often associated with injuries that are severe in nature. As a result, quick, decisive action must be taken.

    Immediate Treatment

  1. The first treatment for a broken shoulder generally involves placing the affected area in a sling so as to prevent further injury as the shoulder is most vulnerable at this point. Applying a cold compress to the injured area also helps to decrease swelling and pain.
  2. Immobilization

  3. Pain relievers and immobilization for a period of three to four weeks is generally sufficient for fractures to the scapula (shoulder bone).
  4. Surgery

  5. Fractures to the scapula which affect the neck or shoulder socket usually require surgery. Consulting an orthopedic surgeon can help one to know if such treatment is needed.
  6. Exercise and Physical Therapy

  7. Exercise and physical therapy can help improve the mobility of a broken shoulder. Such treatment can be initiated as soon as one week from the time of injury.
  8. Follow-Up Treatment

  9. Orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine specialists typically treat broken shoulders on a continual basis in order to promote healing. During the early stages of recovery, pain relievers and immobilization may be needed.
