What Are the Different Tribal Vocal Music Styles of the Philippines?

The music of the Philippines has been shaped by both foreign influences and native culture. Even though Western music dominates the island chain, indigenous music is still a part of the Filipino culture.

  1. Location

    • Most of the indigenous music is found on the northernmost and southernmost islands.

    The Southern Islands

    • One specific vocal styling in the south has been heavily influenced by the Muslim minority. It is distinguished by its nasally, tense, high pitch. The use of an accompanying gong is common throughout the indigenous Filipino culture, though types vary.

    Vocal Music

    • According to The Sound Archive of Oral Traditions Project, vocal music within traditional tribes is considered more important than instrumental music. Oral transmission of stories in the Philippines is traditionally sung in poetic stanzas. This alone is the way that history, most stories, and cultural values are passed on by these tribes.

    The Mindanos

    • The Mindanos living in the southern Philippines have been influenced by Asian and Indian music. Often, a cappella singing is done with long melodies or religious chants. The Mindanos also sing for entertainment.

    Preserving Oral Traditions

    • The Sound Archive of Oral Traditions was put together by German ethnomusicologist, Hans Brandeis, to conserve and record the oral traditions Filipino tribes. The project's goals are to preserve history, teach about the vocal styling and publish the music.
