What are the Duties of A Security Officer?

Security officers watch over properties.

Security officers, also known as security guards, are responsible for keeping properties safe from hazards including burglaries, vandalism and fire. Their presence is meant to deter illegal activities.

Training

Educational requirements for security officer positions are usually minimal, with no more than a high school diploma required. Some positions may require specialized training in firearms usage, evidence handling or use of force.

Responsibilities

Security officers may be static or mobile. Static positions require the security officer to stay in one location for long periods of time, often monitoring security cameras. Mobile positions require walking or driving from location to location to conduct property checks.

Work Environment

Security officers may be on their feet for much of their shifts. Indoor and outdoor work may be required, depending on the nature of the position.

Tools of the Job

Security officers may need to be familiar with two-way radios, closed circuit televisions, computers, cellphones, metal detectors and guns. On-the-job training for this equipment is possible.

Job Outlook

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment for security officers is expected to grow 17 percent between 2006 and 2016, which is a higher rate of growth than most professions.
