Anxiety and Depression Treatment for Teenagers

Teenagers are known for their abiding angst. Anxiety and depression coincide with the age. For some, however, these behaviors and feelings are more than emotional growing pains; these behaviors may be a sign of a serious mood disorder that requires treatment.

  1. Symptoms

    • When teenagers become depressed, they may exhibit mood swings, sleep problems and disturbing thoughts. Similar symptoms occur with anxiety, but teens may also become lightheaded, feel chest pains or develop muscle aches.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for teenage depression and anxiety involves psychotherapy, family therapy and, in some cases, prescription medication.

    Therapy

    • Therapy options for anxiety and depression in teens may involve psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy. These therapies teach teens how to identify behaviors, change behaviors and interact better with others.

    Medications

    • In severe cases, a doctor may prescribe selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors like Paxil and Zoloft for adolescent depression and anxiety. Other types of antidepressants, like tricyclics, are not approved for teen use.

    Considerations

    • It's best to treat teen mental illnesses early, at the first signs. If depression and anxiety symptoms last longer than two weeks, call your mental healthcare provider.

    Warning

    • Watch for suicidal thoughts and suicidal tendencies, especially if your teenager takes an antidepressant.
