What Are the Dangers of Camphor Essential Oil?

Camphor oil is an extract of the Cinnamomum camphora plant. The oil itself is seldom used internally but the vapors of the heated oil are used to treat lung problems and depression and the oil can be applied externally. Its has also been used as a treatment for the bubonic plague and also in ancient embalming.

  1. Cancer Dangers of Camphor

    • Some types of camphor oil have a high level of safrole. Brown camphor oil may contain 80 percent safrole. Safrole is considered a carcinogen by the FDA. Safrole has been synthesized and is used in insecticides.

    Other Dangers of Camphor

    • Camphor is not used in aromatherapy due to the possibilities of convulsions with use.

    Signs of a Camphor Overdose

    • Vomiting and convulsions are symptoms of a camphor overdose. Pregnant women and epileptics are urged to avoid exposure to the substance.

    Selecting the Proper Camphor Oil

    • Use white camphor oil. It should be clear and not smell old or moldy.

    Safe Uses for Camphor

    • Camphor has analgesic properties. A cloth soaked in the oil can be used as a compress to treat sprains and bruises. A vapor therapy is sometimes used to treat coughs, flu, bronchitis and depression.
