What Are the Treatments for Thoracolumbar Scoliosis?

Thoracolumbar scoliosis is type of curve pattern associated with scoliosis. The condition occurs when the spine curves 10 degrees or more, and with thoracolumbar scoliosis, 80 percent of the curves are on the right side. It is treated with braces or surgery.

  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of thoracolumbar scoliosis include back pain, fatigue, uneven shoulders or hips and a spine which curves abnormally.

    Causes

    • Thoracolumbar scoliosis can be congenital, caused by malformation of spinal bones or ribs fusing together during pregnancy. It can be caused by poor muscle control, muscle weakness, or paralysis.

    Treatment

    • Treatment of thoracolumbar scoliosis depends on its causes, where the curvature is located and if the patient is still growing. Some mild cases won't need treatment but will need to be checked every six months.

    Bracing

    • Bracing is used for patients whose thoracolumbar scoliosis has worsened. Bracing will slow the progression of the condition and help straighten the spine.

    Surgery

    • If curvature of the spine is severe a doctor may recommend surgery which will correct the curve by fusing bones together. Bones are held in place by metal rods.
