Depression and sickness

Depression is a persistent feeling of sadness and hopelessness that can arise due to a number of factors. Although the flu and depression can occur together, there is no actual condition know as post-flu depression; one simply increases the likelihood of the other.

  1. Flu and the Immune System

    • There are a number of ways that depression and the flu are linked. During a bout of the flu, the immune system is weakened. A weakened immune system has been linked to symptoms such as depression.

    Depression as a Cause

    • Depression also may be responsible for weakening the immune system, resulting in a greater susceptibility to the flu. This can occur due to the imbalance in brain chemicals associated with depression or as a side effect of antidepressant medication.

    A Balance

    • Mental and physical health is maintained by balance--a balance in the immune system as well as a balance of brain neurochemicals. Depression and physical disease can throw off your balance.

    Stress

    • Another factor linking depression with the flu is the pain, decreased physical activity and stress you undergo while battling the flu. Depression simply may be a natural response to an unpleasant situation that will cease upon recovery.

    Treatment

    • In most cases, treating flu symptoms and promoting a quick recovery is sufficient in addressing depression resulting from the illness. If the symptoms of depression become severe and impede recovery, it may be necessary to seek medical help for the depressive symptoms.
