Elevators are mechanical devices that are used to transport people or materials in a car or on a platform, typically between the floors of a building. Elevators can be found in commercial, industrial and even residential buildings.

  1. History

    • According to elevatorinpsector.com, Elisha Otis is credited with inventing the first passenger elevator in 1853. The first elevator of this type was installed in 1857.

    Types

    • The two most common types of elevators are traction and hydraulic elevators. Traction elevators move the car by means of steel cables, while hydraulic elevators use hydraulic pistons to move the car.

    Manufacturing

    • The Otis Elevator company remains the world's largest manufacturer of elevators. Other major manufacturers are the Schindler Elevator Company and ThyssenKrupp Elevator.

    Elevator Safety

    • According to the Center for Construction Research and Training, there are only about 30 elevator-related deaths per year in the United States. This makes elevators one of the safest forms of conveyance in use.

    High Rises

    • Due to the mechanical limits of hydraulic pistons, traction elevators are the most common type of elevator found in buildings over five stories.
