Traffic Accident Investigation Careers

A road traffic investigator determines how an accident occurred. Traffic investigators will examine the point of impact, the amount of damage, the position of the vehicles and other details to figure out the cause of the accident. Road traffic accident investigators can work in a variety of places.

  1. Accident Consultants

    • Some road traffic accident investigators work hourly in freelance capacities for law offices or insurance companies.

    Police Force

    • Some road traffic investigators work for the police. They may be salaried employees who determine accident fault and causation and make traffic safety recommendations.

    Forensic Road Traffic Investigator

    • This career requires the traffic investigator to help determine the cause of an accident for the purposes of a criminal or civil lawsuit. It requires on-site evaluations of the accident and may require the technical engineering ability to examine vehicle parts.

    Provost Marshal

    • The military employs provost marshals who supervise and coordinate all phases of accident investigation, receive investigation updates and report their progress.

    Military Police

    • Military police traffic investigators prepare accident reports, investigate traffic accidents, make safety recommendations and report to the provost marshal.
