Tow Truck Rules and Regulations

Tow service companies are required to have a flatbed truck as well as the regular tow vehicle.

Tow truck rules and regulations are strictly enforced at the municipal government level. At the state level, laws regulate predatory towing service practices to prevent high tow and storage charges

  1. Bidding Process

    • Municipal governments require that tow truck companies bid for city contracts to tow disabled, abandoned and wrecked vehicles at the municipality's expense.

    Proper Licensing

    • Tow truck companies must posses proper business licenses, properly licensed operators, proof of wrecker/truck ownership and appropriate vehicle insurance, according to the city of Bridgeport, Connecticut.

    Law Enforcement Response

    • Wreckers must be on call around the clock for police-related clean-up. A "three strikes" policy in which tow companies are stripped of a municipal contract if they fail to respond on three occasions may be enforced, according to the city of Charlotte, North Carolina.

    Types of Trucks

    • Most municipal agencies require tow services to operate a hitch-tow truck to lift and tow a vehicle on its wheels and a flatbed to haul more damaged vehicles.

    Fee Schedule

    • Tow services must provide local municipalities and customers a tow and storage fee schedule and not charge for fees for outstanding traffic fines.

    Motorist Demands

    • In some cities and counties, motorists are allowed to have their vehicle released to them in the middle of an operator hooking up vehicle for parking fines.
