Important Facts About the Human Eye

Important Facts About the Human Eye thumbnail
The human eye is one of the most complex organs in the body.

The human eye is a complex sense organ that receives light and images and then transmits these images to the brain. The eye is capable of instantly moving hundreds of muscles in the body.

  1. Size

    • An adult eyeball measures approximately one inch in diameter. The exposed portion of the eye accounts for only one-sixth of its surface area.

    Structure

    • The human eye is enclosed in a socket and surrounded by a layer of orbital fat, protecting it from injury.

    Safety

    • Although the structure of the eye helps prevent injuries, safety goggles are also important for that purpose. It is also possible to contract eye infections from swimming with contact lenses.

    Transplantation

    • The eye cannot be transplanted because the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, cannot be reattached once severed. However, the clear front part of the eye called the cornea can be transplanted.

    Fun Fact

    • Under optimal conditions, the human eye can see the light from a candle 14 miles away.
