Signs & Symptoms of ADHD Mental Disorder

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) causes difficulty for afflicted children or adults in the ability to concentrate and function in many settings. It may also impact the building or maintenance of relationships.

Types

There are three types of ADHD diagnoses--predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive and a combination of the two.

Identification

Children who are diagnosed with this disorder must exhibit symptoms for six months or longer and at a more noticeable level than other children of the same age.

Symptoms

The inattentive type of ADHD can be recognized by difficulty in completing tasks, lack of attention to details or being easily distracted. The hyperactive-impulsive type of ADHD corresponds with a constant need for movement, an inability to control actions or words and lack of patience.

Facts

According to the American Psychiatric Association, 3 percent to 7 percent of school-age children suffers from ADHD.

Significance

ADHD that is left untreated in children can progress to more serious problems with relationships and productivity in adulthood.
