Buyer's Assistant Duties

Assistant buyers help buyers purchase merchandise for their company and sometimes offer advice on the kinds of products to get that will benefit customers and generate sales. Buyer's assistants work in a variety of industries, such as food service and clothing.

  1. Delivery

    • Buyer's assistants work with the buyers to make sure the products arrive at the company on time. They do this by keeping in touch with the vendors and distribution team.

    Markdowns

    • They help buyers with the markdown on certain items, and they make sure that the items have the appropriate prices on them.

    Trends

    • Buyer's assistants research current trends within their industries and suggest ideas to the buyer that will increase sales. For example, a buyer's assistant at a gourmet food company notices a trend towards Indian food, and she and the buyer locate items that customers might like.

    Discuss Problems

    • Buyer's assistants meet with buyers and company management to discuss any setbacks that might hurt sales. For example, the buyer's assistant may let them know that a certain brand of jeans are no longer in style and may end up as slow-sellers. He also might suggest that these go on sale.

    Know The Competition

    • Buyer's assistants often visit their competitors to seek out what they offer to the customers. They then think of ways to outsell them, and then they buy items for their companies that the competitors don't currently offer.
