What Is a Moon Roof?

A moon roof is an inbuilt glass panel in the top of a car that retracts completely. Moon roofs are standard in some cars but are available as an option for additional cost in others.

  1. History

    • The term moon roof originated with Ford during the 1970s, according to Sunroofs.org.

    Features

    • Moon roofs are mechanized, meaning that the driver or passenger pushes a button that causes the moon roof to open or close automatically. The driver or passenger does not have to manually slide or push the moon roof to open or close it.

    Types

    • Some moon roofs have shades that cover the glass panel when the moon roof is not open. It is also possible for a moon roof to be tinted, allowing it to let in less sunlight when not in use.

    Benefits

    • Moon roofs allow air to circulate through the car during driving. This cools off the car and allows in fresh air.

    Considerations

    • Moon roofs that do not have shades or tinting allow sunlight to enter a car while it is parked, which increases the temperature of a car on a hot day. The mechanical parts on a moon roof have the potential to break and need repaired.
