Chronic daily migraines make you miserable.

There are many types of migraines. As its name suggests, chronic daily migraines occur nearly every day. They are also known as chronic migraines, transformed migraines or chronic daily headaches.

  1. Symptoms

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of chronic migraines include throbbing pain on one side of the head, nausea and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. The pain worsens when the patient moves.

    Diagnosis

    • The Mayo Clinic also notes that for migraines to be diagnosed as chronic, they need to occur 15 or more days a month for at least three months in a row.

    Misconceptions

    • A patient does not have to experience an aura before head pain begins. Auras are visual hallucinations or sounds that are imagined.

    Medications

    • According to the National Headache Foundation, chronic migraine medication includes painkillers and a daily preventive medicine such as blood pressure medications, antidepressants or anticonvulsants.

    Expert Advice

    • The National Headache Foundation also recommends the patient keep a migraine journal to help identify any chemicals, foods or stressors that can trigger a migraine attack.
