Basset hounds are known for their long, droopy ears. This ear structure can drag dust and allergens into the inner ear. Without regular ear cleanings, basset hounds may develop chronic ear problems.

The most common types of ear aliments in basset hounds are ear infections, yeast infections and ear wax buildup.
Ear Infections

Ear infections are usually caused by bacteria or allergens in the ear. Chronic ear infections typically signify another problem. The infection could be a sign of allergies or foreign objects being lodged in the ear.

Yeast Infections

Yeast infections are similar to ear infections, but are caused by yeast and not bacteria. Signs of a yeast infection include a brown discharge and an odor coming from the ear.
Ear Wax Buildup

A buildup of ear wax can cause pain for a basset hound. The ear structure makes these dogs prone to excessive ear wax that needs regular cleaning. Ear wax buildup can lead to infections.
Symptoms

Symptoms of ear pain include excessive ear scratching, head shaking and tilting the head to one side. Take your pet to a veterinarian at the first signs of these symptoms.
Cleaning

Basset hounds require weekly ear cleaning. Use a cotton ball and a ear cleaning solution to clean the outer ear. Fill the inner ear with solution and massage for 20 seconds. Use a cotton swab to wipe out any dirt and liquid.
