Your cat's urinary tract health is important

Feline urinary disease is more commonly known as feline lower urinary tract disease---FLUTD---and covers various conditions associated with a cat's urinary tract. A serious disease, FLUTD can end in death if not treated.

  1. Causes

    • Since FLUTD covers numerous medical problems dealing with the urinary tract, there are various causes. Infection, bladder stones and tumors can sometimes be responsible for disease, as can stress and not drinking enough water.

    Symptoms

    • The most common symptoms of FLUTD occur during the function of bladder relief, such as trouble urinating, struggling in the litter box or blood in the urine. Vomiting and depression may also be present.

    Diagnosis

    • Your vet will perform a physical exam to check for a distended bladder. A urinalysis may also be ordered, and will check for things like crystals, bacteria and blood. X-rays can check for abnormalities such as tumors or bladder stones.

    Treatment

    • Treatment will depend on the cause of the urinary tract problem and may be as simple as changing your cat's diet or administering antibiotics. In the case of larger stones or tumors, surgery may be necessary.

    Prognosis

    • Early detection will increase the positive prognosis for your cat, as most conditions can be treated successfully. Recurrence of FLUTD is unfortunately common, so careful monitoring of your cat's health is important.
