What Are Dado Blades?

Dado saw blades are specialized blades for certain types of cuts. Anyone who pursues woodworking should learn about these blades.

  1. Definition

    • A dado blade, also referred to as a dado set, is a a circular saw blade used to cut grooves, or "dadoes," in woodworking. These blades usually are used with a table saw.

    Purpose

    • Dado blades cut grooves that other saws are not capable of making. Many woodworkers use a dado blade when they can't make the cut with a conventional saw.

    Blade Types

    • There are two types of dado blades: stacked sets and wobble sets.

    Stacked Blades

    • Stacked blades have two circular-saw blades attached to the sides of removable chippers. The removable chippers can be changed to help guarantee a cut at varying widths or lengths. As the blades make their cuts, the chippers repel the wood chips and sawdust, smoothing the bottom of the grooves.

    Wobble Blades

    • A wobble blade is circular and is mounted on an adjustable saw arm to create a variety of angles. One disadvantage is that it cannot cut a flat-bottomed groove. All grooves are V-shaped with this blade.

    Custom Finishes

    • Dado blades are ideal for making shelves, rabbit joints and box joints. This adds a variety to the average table saw.
