What Do RN Case Managers Do?

An RN Case Manager oversees all development stages of the patient. She will collaborate on a regular basis with family, physicians, team and patient to ensure high quality health care is administered.

Overall Health Assessment

As an RN Case Manager you will be expected to assess the health status of all patients in your care. This could include medical data history, current physical conditions, medical diagnosis, available treatment options, financial outlay and planning for discharge.

Educating Physicians

RN Case Managers are responsible for staying up to date on the Utilization Management Plan for the hospital. You must ensure that all physicians are within appropriate compliance standards and that best practices are adhered to at all times.

Administrative Responsibilities

Maintaining appropriate medical records is a task RN Case Managers perform on a regular basis. Paperwork might include handling continued stay denial letters and discharge papers.

Operations Management

Another essential responsibility is to develop and further enhance relationships outside of your department. You will need the ability to work with external health care agencies, outside medical staff and other internal departments.

Education and Training

An undergraduate degree in nursing is required for the role, along with certification in case management.
