Ford Ranger Transmission Identification

Since 1983, the Ford Motor Company has used about 10 transmissions for its compact Ford Ranger. The transmission identification code can be found on the vehicle's safety compliance label on the driver's side door post.

Japanese Transmission Connection

The Ford Ranger shares many components with the Mazda compact trucks, including the M50D five-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Toyo Koygo and Mitsubishi manuals also were used.

Early Rangers

The C3 three-speed automatic in the 1983 through 1988 Rangers are identified with a "V" with gear ratios 2.47, 1.47 and 1.00, according to the rangerstation.com.

C5 Transmission

A "W" identifies the three-speed automatic for the 1982 to 1984 four-wheel-drive Rangers.

"T" Code

"T" identifies the A4LD four-speed auto with overdrive on the 1985 to 1994 models; the 4R44E on the 1995 through 2001 2.5- and 3-liter Rangers; and the 4R55E auto on the 1995 through 2001 4-liter Rangers.

"D" Code

The 5R55E five-speed automatic on the 1997 to 2009 4-liter Rangers are identified with the "D" code with gear ratios of 2.47, 1.87, 1.47, 1.00 and 0.75.

Manual Transmissions

"D" identified Mitsubishi manuals in the 1988 to 1992 Rangers; "X" and "5" for Toyo Koygos in 1983 to 1987 models; and "M and "J" for Mazda on post-1988 Rangers.
