The physical training for a firefighter is challenging and geared toward the successful development of firefighting techniques. Firefighters are expected to maintain a certain level of strength and stamina to perform their jobs. Beyond general training exercises, specific exercises involving the proper, safe use of equipment are also necessary.

    Identification

  1. The International Association of Fire Fighters has developed a standardized physical training test, known as the Joint Fire Service Candidate Physical Ability Test, or CPAT.
  2. Function

  3. The purpose behind the physical training and CPAT test is to make sure that firefighters are equipped to handle the day-to-day tasks necessary in the job field.
  4. Features

  5. CPAT tests include stair climbing, carrying equipment, dragging a hose, raising and extending a ladder, entering a facility by force, searching through a maze, simulating a rescue, and breaching a ceiling.
  6. Considerations

  7. According to the Don McNea Fire School, firefighter training is extremely demanding. Requirements include strong levels of agility, strength and stamina.
  8. Significance

  9. Red, White and Blue Fitness states that one of the most important aspects of physical training for firefighters is the avoidance of injury. Poor training and follow-through can result in injuries, limiting the firefighter's usefulness.
