- The International Association of Fire Fighters has developed a standardized physical training test, known as the Joint Fire Service Candidate Physical Ability Test, or CPAT.
- The purpose behind the physical training and CPAT test is to make sure that firefighters are equipped to handle the day-to-day tasks necessary in the job field.
- CPAT tests include stair climbing, carrying equipment, dragging a hose, raising and extending a ladder, entering a facility by force, searching through a maze, simulating a rescue, and breaching a ceiling.
- According to the Don McNea Fire School, firefighter training is extremely demanding. Requirements include strong levels of agility, strength and stamina.
- Red, White and Blue Fitness states that one of the most important aspects of physical training for firefighters is the avoidance of injury. Poor training and follow-through can result in injuries, limiting the firefighter's usefulness.
