The laws regarding Ohio parking regulations, both for handicapped and non-handicapped motorists, is detailed under Chapter 4511.69 of Ohio Revised Code, with regulations specifically for the handicapped being found in Sections E through I and Section K.

  1. Definition

    • Handicapped people are legally defined in Ohio as "any person who has lost the use of one or both legs or one or both arms, who is blind, deaf, or so severely handicapped as to be unable to move without the aid of crutches or a wheelchair, or whose mobility is restricted by a permanent cardiovascular, pulmonary, or other handicapping condition."

    Muncipal Requirements

    • Special parking places for the handicapped are required for municipal traffic planning, along with signs bearing the international symbol for the handicapped.

    Prohibitions

    • No vehicle can park in spaces designated for the handicapped unless they have a placard or license plate bearing the international symbol for the handicapped.

    Privileges

    • Placarded and plated handicapped vehicles are allowed two extra hours in addition to legal parking limits in municipalities except when the vehicle poses as a traffic hazard or when otherwise specified.

    Fines

    • Not properly marking handicapped spaces can result in a fine of up to $25.

    Warning

    • Those who are forced to relinquish their handicapped placards or plates are not entitled to receive them back under state law.
