Scabies is a transmittable skin disease that is caused by a tiny mite that burrows into the top layer of the skin to lay its eggs. If this condition is properly diagnosed, treatment for scabies is generally very effective.

    Medications

  1. Over-the-counter medicines are usually not strong enough to cure scabies. Prescription medicines for scabies include Permethrin cream 5% (Elimite), Ivermectin, Lindane 1%, sulfur ointment (precipitated sulfur) 5% to 10% and Crotamiton 10% (Eurax).
  2. Directions

  3. Creams and lotions used to treat scabies must be applied on the entire body and left for eight to 14 hours and then washed off.
  4. Failure

  5. Medications for scabies fail when the medicines are not used properly, when scabies eggs are not killed, resulting in a new infestation, and when other members of the household contract the disease and are not treated.
  6. Other Actions

  7. There are certain things you must do at home to avoid re-infecting yourself or your family. This includes washing your clothes, linens and other things you have used with hot water.
  8. Warning

  9. Lindane is considered to be safe and effective for treating scabies. However, when incorrectly used, it can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system.
