- Over-the-counter medicines are usually not strong enough to cure scabies. Prescription medicines for scabies include Permethrin cream 5% (Elimite), Ivermectin, Lindane 1%, sulfur ointment (precipitated sulfur) 5% to 10% and Crotamiton 10% (Eurax).
- Creams and lotions used to treat scabies must be applied on the entire body and left for eight to 14 hours and then washed off.
- Medications for scabies fail when the medicines are not used properly, when scabies eggs are not killed, resulting in a new infestation, and when other members of the household contract the disease and are not treated.
- There are certain things you must do at home to avoid re-infecting yourself or your family. This includes washing your clothes, linens and other things you have used with hot water.
- Lindane is considered to be safe and effective for treating scabies. However, when incorrectly used, it can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system.
