Peppermint oil is an appropriate treatment for children older than eight. A study conducted by the University of Missouri Department of Child Health and the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology found giving peppermint oil capsules reduced the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome in older children.
Dogs

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) does not recommend giving 100 percent peppermint oil to a dog. It causes problems to the stomach, central nervous system and skin.
Cats

Cats are especially sensitive to peppermint oil, according to the ASPCA. If taken in large enough amounts, the oil causes liver damage, central nervous depression or aspiration pneumonia.
