How Long Does It Take to Become an HVAC Tech?

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are found all over the world in homes, offices, hospitals, and other various commercial and industrial locations. These devices sometimes need repair or maintenance and require the assistance of HVAC technicians.

Job Description

HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) technicians are trained to work with ventilation, heating, cooling and repair systems. They must have a wide knowledge of mechanical and electrical components, and they should be able to diagnose and repair issues in such systems.

Where they Work

HVAC technicians work for the government, for other contractors, for industrial organizations or for themselves as self-employed technicians.

Education

Those interested in becoming an HVAC technician can expect to be in school for six months to two years. Programs are located in technical and vocational schools, community colleges and distance learning courses online. Some states require that HVAC technicians are state or locally certified. Ultimately, the program length depends on the school.

Training

On top of education, some employers prefer that applicants have field experience or an apprenticeship. Apprenticeship programs last between six months to five years and are completely hands-on training.

Continuing Education

Government regulations, restrictions and technology are constantly changing, so HVAC technicians must attend continuing education to keep up with such changes.
