Premarin cream is an estrogen replacement medication used to treat vaginal dryness, painful sex and genital itching that is associated with menopause. It is typically prescribed for short-term use.

Premarin cream comes with an applicator designed much like a tampon applicator. The prescribed dose should be squeezed into the barrel of the applicator to the appropriate dosage mark and then inserted into your vagina. You press the plunger to push the medicine into your vagina.

According to Drugs.com, side effects may include stomach or abdominal cramping, breast pain, bloating, hair loss, fluid retention, headache, high blood pressure, liver problems, enlargement of fibroid tumors, high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, vaginal yeast infections and irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting.

Rxlist.com indicates that using estrogens can increase your risk of uterine and endometrial cancer, heart attack, dementia, blood clots and stroke. In addition, your risk of breast cancer is increased when taking estrogen for a long time (four years or more). Regular gynecological visits are important.
Interactions

Inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter remedies and supplements. Some medications can result in an adverse reaction when taken with Premarin. These include blood thinners, oral diabetes medications, tranquilizers, steroids, barbiturates, thyroid medications, some antidepressants and vitamin C.
Precautions

You should notify your doctor immediately if you experience breast lumps; abdominal swelling, pain or tenderness; pain in your calves or chest; dizziness; severe headache; shortness of breath; coughing up blood or vision changes. These may be signs of stroke, blood clots or heart attack.
Warnings

Premarin can cause some conditions to become worse, such as diabetes, migraines, asthma, lupus, liver tumors and epilepsy. This drug should not be used when you are pregnant or nursing.
