- Rigid gas permeable lenses were first available in 1978 and are different than older hard contacts that were made from PMMA and were not oxygen permeable.
- RPG lenses are less flexible and have a smaller diameter than soft contacts. These lenses do not need to be replaced frequently, unless vision prescriptions change.
- Rigid gas permeable lenses can provide the wearer with better vision correction, greater durability and offer resistance to protein deposits.
- RPG contact lenses must be worn on a regular basis and require an adjustment period for optimal comfort. Some people experience a blurring effect when changing between RPG lenses and glasses.
- Rigid gas permeable lenses are best suited for individuals with an astigmatism, presbyopia, keratoconus and for individuals who have undergone refractive surgery.
