Difference Between Hemp Milk and Almond Milk

Almond milk has a long history dating to the Middle Ages, when fresh animal milk was difficult to preserve. Hemp milk is a much newer product, similar to soy milk but safe for people with soy or tree-nut allergies. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Similarities

    • Hemp milk and almond milk both are made by blending the seeds or nuts with water, removing the pulp and adding sweetener as desired. They are used as dairy substitutes for vegans or people with dairy allergies or intolerance.

    History of Almond Milk

    • Almond milk was a popular ingredient in the Middle Ages. It was substituted for milk, which spoiled quickly because of the lack of refrigeration. Almond milk also could be churned into butter that was suitable for consuming during Lent.

    History of Hemp Milk

    • Hemp milk was first sold commercially in 2007 by two companies that offered Living Harvest Hempmilk and Manitoba Harvest Hemp Bliss. Manufacturers in the United States must import their seeds because the hemp plant is illegal to grow there.

    Benefits

    • Almond milk and hemp milk are good substitutes for dairy, as they provide a balance of fatty acids, protein and minerals--unlike grain-based substitutes, such as rice milk.

    Allergens

    • Almond milk causes problems for people with tree-nut allergies, which are becoming more common. Hemp milk is free of the allergens that affect people with tree-nut or soy allergies.
