Doctors don't completely understand how Strattera works but believe its benefits result after it increases levels of a brain chemical known as norepinephrine, according to RxList.com.

Uses

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a condition caused by imbalances of brain chemicals. Some people with ADHD benefit from the increased level of norepinephrine that Strattera produces.

Benefits

For some patients with ADHD, Strattera allows for increased concentration and decreases restlessness, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Features

Strattera is approved to treat ADHD in children, adolescents and adults. Often patients are given a high dosage of the drug until symptoms improve and are then given a lower maintenance dose on an ongoing basis to prevent the return of symptoms.

Considerations

Strattera is most effective when combined with psychological therapy, the Mayo Clinic says. If you have a history of bipolar disorder, blood vessel problems, heart disease, arrhythmia, high or low blood pressure, difficulty with urination, priapism, a psychotic disorder, glaucoma, rapid heart rate or liver disease, it may not be safe to take Strattera, the Mayo Clinic warns.
