What Is Elliptical Training?
Elliptical training uses elliptical machines to improve your cardiovascular fitness. It can be done on its own or as a way to cross-train with other workouts like running, walking and biking.
-
Function
-
When you run on an elliptical machine, your feet never leave the pedals. You can adjust the resistance, incline and direction so you work different muscles during training.
Features
-
Unlike treadmills that do not force you to use your upper body, ellipticals have moving handle bars so you can work your upper and lower body at the same time.
-
Types
-
Most elliptical machines come programmed with different training workouts. These include heart rate workouts, which vary the intensity during the workout, and hill workouts, which vary the incline.
Benefits
-
Since your feet never leave the pedals, you minimize the impact on your joints when doing elliptical training, unlike when you are running on hard pavement.
Size
-
Ellipticals are smaller than treadmills, so if you are pressed for space in your home or apartment, elliptical training may be the best cardio workout for you.
