The elevator is a device used to lift and lower people and items from different floors of buildings. The machines are also known as lifts or cars in certain parts of the world. There are many different designs of elevators, changing in usage and ability over the years.

    History

  1. According to the television program "Book of Secrets," an Arab inventor named Ibn Khalaf al-Muradi developed an elevator in 1000 AD to raise a battering ram for the purpose of destroying a fortress. This makes it one of the oldest elevator concepts created.
  2. Benefits

  3. The National Association of Home Buyers identified elevators as an important asset to home design in 2004. A study based on U.S. national home value averages showed that elevators add 10 percent to the value of a home.
  4. Features

  5. While an elevator can simply be designed with a box connected to a rope, modern passenger elevators are more elaborate. Advanced mechanical systems are utilized, along with control mechanisms and safety devices to prevent failure.
  6. Types

  7. Elevators are available in a variety of forms. The most common usage is for passengers in residential or commercial buildings, but there are also large transport elevators capable of delivering very heavy items from place to place.
  8. Warning

  9. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the most common injury resulting from elevator usage is falling. This occurs when the call button is pushed, the doors open and no elevator arrives.
