When comparing the benefits of a Bowflex and a treadmill, the question really becomes one of muscle-building vs. cardiovascular endurance. Both have their weight-loss benefits, and much will depend on how exactly you choose to use each piece of exercise equipment.

    Benefits of Bowflex

  1. Muscle burns more calories.

    Muscle burns more calories.
A Bowflex machine uses resistance bars to tone and build muscle. This has weight-loss benefits because muscle requires more calories to use as fuel than fat does. So, the more muscle you build, the more calories you will burn throughout the day, regardless of whether or not you are working out.
  2. Benefits of Treadmill

  3. Running can blast calories faster than other activities.

Running can blast calories faster than other activities.
According to www.TreadmillAdvisor.com, a treadmill can be very effective in burning calories when it is used at a steep incline or for running. Walking alone doesn't burn a significant amount of calories. Treadmills don't typically build muscle, but they help you burn calories and tone muscle. So while you don't get the long-term metabolic benefits that muscle-building provides, you do burn a significant amount of calories to result in weight loss.
  4. Cross Training

  5. For faster weight loss results, www.WashingtonPost.com recommends using both a muscle-building exercise machine like a Bowflex and a treadmill for cardiovascular endurance. Build muscle to boost your metabolism throughout the day, and run for immediate calorie burning to see fast and lasting weight loss results.
  6. Using the Bowflex for Cardio

  7. The resistance training offered by the Bowflex burns fewer calories over a workout because you often rest between sets. It is possible to get a cardio-like workout using a Bowflex by eliminating rest and performing a circuit-training session where you move from one exercise to the next, do higher repetitions using lower resistance and keep moving at a fast pace. This keeps your heart rate up while toning and beginning to build muscle.
  8. Incorporating Healthy Habits

  9. Regardless of how many calories you burn, your weight-loss efforts will depend also on the number and type of calories you consume. In addition to using a Bowflex and/or a treadmill for exercise, you need to eat a healthy, balanced diet of whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat foods. By making smart food choices, your body will be better fueled to get the most from your workouts.
  10. Warning

  11. Prior to starting any fitness or diet program, talk to your doctor about your specific goals and health history for professional guidance.
