Gym Equipment Information

Gym equipment should be used properly for a couple of reasons: One, to obtain maximum results and two, to avoid injury. At first glance, all the different types of equipment can be overwhelming to absorb and figure out how to use.

  1. Cardiovascular Equipment

    • This type of equipment is used for cardiovascular conditioning. Examples include exercise bikes and stair climbers. All feature some kind of control panel with easy to use instructions. You can use them manually, meaning adjust the speed, incline and intensity yourself. Pre-progammed workouts are also an option.

    Machines

    • Machines are easy to use and generally safer than free weights. They almost always feature a how-to diagram beside the machine. Slowly controlled movements are best used within the range of motion the machine allows. Weight is added and decreased by shoving a pin under the desired weight stack

    Free Weights

    • These allow you to customize your own workout. Unlike machines, where your path of movement is already set, free weights can isolate a muscle easier because you can extend your movement as you wish. The weights are "free," not attached to a particlar track. Examples of these include dumbbells.

    Functionality

    • These are exercise balls and bands. The BOSU ( the both sides up) half ball is used in working on stability and balance. All of these types of equipment focus mainly on core building.

    Stretching

    • Mats are used for stretching. You can incorporate a ball to stretch over or bands to increase flexibility during the stretches.
