Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid disease, can be treated effectively with closely monitored medication. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone.

Medication for Hypothyroidism

An underactive thyroid is treated with medication, such as Synthroid, Levoxyl or Levothroid, designed to increase TSH levels in the body.

Treatment for Hyperthyroidism

A person with an overactive thyroid is occasionally given beta-blockers to reduce symptoms associated with the disease. Treatment of this thyroid disorder typically includes radioactive iodine.

Affects of Supplements on Thyroid Medication

According to WebMD, certain supplements can interact with thyroid medicine, causing less of it to be absorbed. These supplements include calcium and iron.

Birth Control and Thyroid Medication

Certain hormones, such as those taken for birth control, can affect the dosage of thyroid medication prescribed. Always inform a doctor when taking other medications.

Natural Thyroid Treatment

A natural thyroid treatment, such as Armour Thyroid, is prescribed less often because it is harder to regulate. Certain patients, however, have experienced success with these types of medications.
