    • Chantix is used in conjunction with behavioral therapy and/or counseling over a 12-week period. A physician may prescribe another 12-week treatment to ensure long-term abstinence.

    Side Effects

    • As with all medications, Chantix has the potential to cause side effects. Since this drug is used as an aid to quit smoking, withdrawal symptoms from nicotine are likely. Nausea, constipation, flatulence, vomiting and problems with sleep have been reported while using Chantix.

    Drug Interactions

    • According to Pfizer, no known drug interactions have been reported in clinical trials. After smoking cessation, consult with a physician if taking insulin, blood thinners or bronchodilators, as a medication adjustment might be required.

    Warning

    • Chantix has been known to cause behavioral changes in patients during treatment, including hostility, agitation, depression and suicidal thoughts.

    Facts

    • Pfizer reports that Chantix was initiated in six clinical trials totaling 3,659 patients who smoked more than 10 cigarettes per day. These clinical studies resulted in a 65 percent completion rate.
