Role Playing & Safety Issues
Role-playing games (whether live action or online) can be loads of fun, but they also come with certain safety issues. Anyone wishing to engage in them should understand what those issues are and follow the prescribed steps as stipulated by the organizing party.
-
Weapons
-
If your live-action role-playing game uses weapons, make sure they all adhere to safety standards and are used only in a strictly defined context. Weapons should be made of foam or similar materials, you should always pull your blows, and you should avoid striking anyone in the head or another vulnerable area.
No Touching
-
If your live-action game doesn't use weapons, then you should never touch another player either with your body or with another object.
-
Time Outs
-
In live-action role-playing, establish a specific signal by which someone can go out of character --a "time out" in case things become too intense. Similarly, adopt a separate hand signal for officials to stop play completely if someone is hurt or there is another problem.
Personal Information
-
If you play an online role-playing game, avoid posting personal information where others can see it. Don't use actual photos of you and keep addresses and telephone numbers private.
Meeting
-
If you meet someone from an online role-playing game in real life, do so only after getting to know them. Also, make sure it's in a public place, and tell a trusted friend or family member exactly where you're going to be.
