Why Is Fructose Bad for You?

Fructose has wide-ranging health implications.

Fructose is a sugar found naturally in fruits and honey, as well as in processed foods and beverages. Research has shown that fructose can have a number of adverse health effects.

  1. Function

    • While fructose has a necessary function in the human body---as an intermediary in the metabolism of glucose---you have no biological need for it in your diet.

    The Problem

    • In small amounts, fructose is harmless. However, when the liver becomes overwhelmed with it, excess fructose ends up in the bloodstream as triglycerides and also raises blood sugar.

    Significance

    • High blood levels of triglycerides (fat) and irregular blood sugar levels are associated with an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

    Sources

    • Fructose from consuming fruit does not cause unhealthy blood sugar levels. But high blood sugar can result from consuming it in sources such as sweetened drinks, table sugar and processed foods.

    Prevention and Solution

    • The best way to avoid excessive fructose intake? Minimize your consumption of processed foods and stick with natural sources of fructose such as fruit.
