Is Unisom Addictive?

Unisom, a brand name for the generic drug doxylamine, is usually taken by people having a difficult time sleeping. The common procedure is to take one 25 milligram tablet about a half hour before going to bed. Never take more than once a day without consulting a physician. It is not regarded as an addictive drug.

  1. Addiction

    • Unisom is not a narcotic and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for non-prescription use. It is not considered habit forming.

    Unisom Dependency

    • Dependence on a sleeping pill results when sleep is unattainable without the pill. To prevent dependency, follow label directions and do not increase doses without the advice of a doctor.

    Counter Indications for Unisom

    • Consult a doctor before taking Unisom, especially if you have asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, liver disease or any chronic ailments. Pregnant women, women attempting to get pregnant or women who are breastfeeding are advised not to take Unisom.

    Possible Drug Interactions

    • Unisom can interact with alcohol, barbiturates, anxiety medication and anti-depressants, among other drugs. Any person considering Unisom and on other medications should consult a pharmacist or doctor before using the drug.

    Side Effects

    • Unisom can cause nervousness, agitation, dry eyes, headache, nausea and many other symptoms. Any change in symptoms beginning after taking Unisom should be discussed with a medical professional.
