What Is a Chinese Gift Exchange?
To add a level of excitement to any Christmas or major holiday party, try having a Chinese gift exchange. It allows for each party attendee to have a little bit of fun and get a present, too.
-
Function
-
A Chinese gift exchange is a type of party game that allows each person at the party to participate. Each participant is given a number, and the order of gift selection is dictated by this number.
Considerations
-
The first person takes a wrapped gift and opens it. The second person can either take the gift from the first person (i.e. "steal" it) or take a gift from under the tree. If a gift is "stolen" from a participant, the participant must surrender it. The pattern continues from there.
-
Steal of a Deal
-
However, if a participant "steals" a gift from someone who has already opened a gift, that person must either open a new gift or "steal" a gift from another participant. The only catch is that the participant cannot "steal" the gift that was just "stolen" from them.
Benefits
-
This game can get quite lively, and people enjoy "stealing" gifts from each other. It provides simple entertainment for any Christmas party. Themed Chinese gift exchanges can be created as well. Ornament swaps, gag gifts or any other theme can be incorporated to make each game unique.
Warning
-
Make sure all guests are notified of the game prior to the party and have the host provide a few extra gifts to ensure that everyone can participate. Also, place a cap on the monetary value of the gifts to keep them all in the same range. Additionally, note that you may not end up with the gift you originally opened, due to the "stealing" option of the game.
