Ginkgo biloba is an herb that has been used for thousands of years that comes from the oldest living tree. It is a very tall tree found in Asia that can live to be a thousand years old.

    • The medicine is found in the extract from the leaves. The tree produces inedible fruit and seeds which are poisonous to humans.

    • It has been used to treat memory disorders and circulation disorders. Ginkgo biloba is used to treat dementia and Alzheimer's disease. It has the ability to dilate blood vessels and improve circulation by inhibiting adhesiveness among platelets in the bloodstream.

    • Ginkgo extract also has antioxidants that inhibit tissue damage and promote normal cellular growth. It has flavonoids that protect nerves and muscles from damage.

    • Its properties have an anti-inflammatory effect, minimizing the damage done by ulcerative colitis.

    Research Study

    • Ginkgo biloba has been researched and found to aide persons with ulcerative colitis. A 2008 study by the University of South Carolina concluded that the ginkgo biloba administered to rats reduced muscle deterioration and reduced tissue damage done by free radicals in their bodies.
