What Is a Video Conference Interview?

A video conference interview usually takes place when a hiring manager is located in a different location from where the potential employee will be working. The conference allows both the interviewee and interviewer to "meet" in person, just like a normal interview.

Advanced Preparation

To have a successful video conference interview, make sure the equipment is working properly several minutes before the meeting. Problems can occur when dealing with any technology, including video.

Room Setup

Be sure the table is clear and the background is appropriate. A proper background is important, as you will want the other person to be able to see you clearly.

Presentation Alignment

Use the picture-in-picture feature to be sure you are in the video picture correctly. Also, make sure you are not too far away or too close to the camera.

Correct Attire

Be sure to dress just as you would for a normal interview: professionally. Wear a complete outfit: Don't assume the person on the other side of the video will see only your upper half.

Eye Contact

During a video conference interview you need to make good eye contact. Look directly at the camera when answering questions so it appears you are looking at the person interviewing you.
