Botox is injected into your skin.

Botox injections are commonly used to treat hyperhidrosis. Unfortunately, there are several complications associated with the use of Botox for this excessive sweating condition.

  1. Background

    • Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterized by excessive and unpredictable sweating. People with hyperhidrosis commonly have overactive sweat glands, which leads to physical and emotional discomfort.

    Pain

    • Intense pain is typically felt at the site of Botox injection. The common areas of injection include the armpits, palms and face; these locations are extremely sensitive to pain and often swell after the injections.

    Muscle Weakness

    • Muscle weakness often occurs at the site of injection, which may prove to be a serious complication. Occasionally, the Botox toxins may spread to other areas of the body, causing muscle weakness there as well.

    Respiratory Problems

    • If the Botox toxins spread to areas related to breathing or swallowing, the muscles here will weaken. This complication results in serious respiratory problems, and may even cause death if not treated immediately.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Occasionally, allergic reactions to the Botox treatments may occur. Allergy complications often include itching, fever, pain, hemorrhaging and flu-like symptoms. Immediate medical attention should be sought.
