Both tai chi and qigong use slow, controlled movements

Tai chi and chi gong, usually spelled qigong in pinyin, the official romanization system of Chinese, are similar forms of Chinese exercise which both have roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

  1. Qigong

    • Qigong is considered one of the pillars of TCM, along with acupuncture, massage and herbal medicine.

    Tai Chi

    • Tai chi comes from qigong and is performed similarly, but with the addition of martial arts moves and philosophy.

    Controlled Movements

    • Both disciplines consist of mastering a series of slow, highly-controlled movements. Like yoga, there are many forms to learn and use, but unlike yoga, you remain standing while performing them, moving smoothly from one form to the next.

    Styles

    • There are many different styles of both qigong and tai chi. Some focus more on the fighting aspects of the arts, and some focus more on health.

    Age Restrictions

    • Both tai chi and qigong are suitable for people of all ages. In China, both disciplines are performed by people in all age groups, but the gentle, low-impact aspect of both tai chi and qigong make them especially popular exercises for older people.
