Tamiflu helps reduce flu symptoms

Go to your doctor or report to an emergency room this flu season and you may be given a prescription for Tamiflu. Tamiflu is generally considered safe, except for minor side effects.

  1. Identification

    • Tamiflu, or oseltamivir, is an antiviral medication. It is prescribed to treat certain flu viruses, including H1N1, and can begin to give you relief within 24 hours.

    Common Side Effects

    • Gastrointestinal problems, such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, are the most common side effects of Tamiflu. They usually occur in the first two days of dosing.

    Less Common Side Effects

    • You may also experience side effects, such as fatigue, headache and trouble sleeping and dizziness. In addition, children may develop eye problems, trouble with their ears and nosebleeds.

    Lung Problems

    • Call your doctor if you experience wheezing and a cough that brings up phlegm.

    Considerations

    • If your child exhibits confusion, irritability or seizures after beginning dosing with Tamiflu, call your doctor. According to the Centers for Disease Control, these symptoms sometimes occur in children and teenagers with the flu and are not necessarily related to Tamiflu.

    Warning

    • Always read the package insert with any prescription, take the drug as your doctor directed and call your health care provider if symptoms worsen.
