    • Depressive episodes that alternate with hypomanic episodes may indicate bipolar II disorder. Hypomania, a less severe type of mania, is characterized by increased activity and energy; a depressive episode is a period of depression.

    Symptoms

    • Bipolar II disorder causes feelings of intense worry or sadness, problems concentrating, fatigue, irritability, agitation, eating less or more than usual, restlessness, impulsive or high-risk behavior and extended episodes of extreme highs and lows.

    Causes

    • The exact cause of bipolar disorder is unknown, but genetics, hormonal and chemical imbalances, and environmental factors may all play a role.

    Treatment

    • Treating bipolar II disorder requires a lifelong plan that may include psychotherapy, mood stabilizing medications, antidepressants or antipsychotic medications.
