What Is Lumbar Facet Fusion?

Lumbar facet fusion is a common diagnosis for patients with back pain. However, many people with this diagnosis are unclear about the location and implications of this particular set of spinal problems.

  1. The Lumbar Spine

    • The lumbar region of the spine is essentially the lower back between the waist and the pelvis. The area just above this is called the thoracic spine, while the area below it is called the sacral spine. Doctors often number the vertebrae here L1, L2, and so on.

    Vertebral Facets

    • The facet is the region of the vertebra that points out of the spine away from the body. It is technically considered a joint, and there should be flexibility between the facets of the vertebrae.

    Fusion

    • When any bony areas in the body fuse together, it means that more bone-like substances have formed around and between them. This can cause two lumbar facets, then, to behave like one single facet joint.

    Problems

    • The issues that you'll notice with lumbar facet fusion are loss of flexibility and limitation in range of motion. You may also have pain, as nerves may be getting pinched or constricted by the improperly function joints.

    Solutions

    • Orthopedic doctors have a variety of treatment options for lumbar facet fusion, depending on the severity of the condition and your symptoms. Pain blocking injections, corrective surgeries, and on-going physical therapy may all be options.
